Poker is a card game played between two or more players for money. The objective is to make the best 5-card hand at the end of the betting round. During the course of multiple rounds, players can discard their cards and draw new ones from the top of the deck (or a set number of replacement cards, depending on the variant being played). All bets are placed into a central pot by each player.
Before the cards are dealt, one or more players must make forced bets, which are called the small blind and the big blind. The dealer then shuffles the cards and deals them out to each player, starting with the player to their immediate left. During the first betting round, players can choose whether or not to call the bet made by the person to their left. If they call, the player places their bet in the pot and they continue to play the hand until it is revealed at the end of the betting round.
The exact origins of poker are unclear, but it is believed to be a combination of several earlier games. It is also widely thought to have been born in the United States, where it was popularized by riverboats and Civil War soldiers. It quickly spread throughout the world. There are many variants of the game, but they all share some common features. For example, all poker games contain five cards. The highest-ranked hand wins the pot.
