Casinos Around the World

A casino is a large room or building that offers various gambling activities. It can also be a place where people meet for entertainment and dance, or a place to socialize and drink. Casinos are often associated with luxury and wealth, and their glamorous image is reflected in popular culture, including film and books.

The precise origin of casino gambling is unknown, but it has existed in some form throughout history. It has been practiced by many societies and cultures, from Ancient Mesopotamia to Elizabethan England, Napoleon’s France to the modern world of Las Vegas.

While many gamblers flock to casinos in the United States, there are dozens more around the world. Some, like the historic Kurhaus in Baden-Baden, Germany, are influenced by the baroque flourishes of ornate French palaces, and were once visited by European royalty and aristocracy. Described by German actress Marlene Dietrich as the “most beautiful casino in the world,” it’s home to an opulent conservatory, a red-and-gold poker room, and more than 140 tables.

Some of the largest casinos in the world are based in Macau, which is sometimes referred to as the Monte Carlo of Asia. While the city is known for its high-roller action, it’s also home to an authentic Chinese cuisine and old Portuguese areas that offer a more mellow experience than on the Strip. Las Vegas, meanwhile, has lost some of its luster as prices rise and visitors are overrun by mega-resorts.
